Scholarships

While we’re trying to keep ticket prices for Camp Boom to a minimum, we understand that the cost may still be too high for some. That is why we are making scholarships available. Please note these scholarships do not include accommodation or travel to Wellington unless explicitly stated.

Camp Boom is all about intersectionality, so if more than one category applies to you, please feel free to apply for more than one scholarship, but you will need to fill out multiple applications.

If more scholarships are sponsored, they’ll be announced here and on social media. The names of scholarship winners will not be made public, but if you win one, you are welcome to tell as many people as you like.

Get in touch if you’d like to sponsor someone to attend the camp.

Scholarships now open

There are not currently any scholarships still available. Any new ones will be announced on social media.

Scholarships that have already been awarded

Hannah Financial Aid Scholarship

Thanks to the amazing generosity of one donor, this scholarship was open to applications from anyone who would like to attend Camp Boom but couldn’t afford a ticket.

Crowdsourced financial hardship scholarship

Thanks to the generosity of donations from the Boom community, this scholarship is open to applications from anyone who would like to attend Camp Boom but can’t afford a ticket. We are still taking donations to open up another scholarship.

Media scholarship

We need more fat stories in the media (stories about actual people, not just headless fatties and scaremongering about the “ob*sity epidemic”) and more positive representation because fat issues are important and fat liberation liberates everyone. So this scholarship is for one journalist to attend Camp, learn from it, and then spread the kaupapa further.

You can be freelance or working for a news organisation (traditional or otherwise), and deal with print, video or podcasts or anything in between – what your platform is isn’t important. What we want to see is that you’re using it wisely. Preference will absolutely be given to fat journalists.

Cat Pausé Super Fat Scholarship

If you’re on the larger end of fat – being a size 28 and up, you’ll probably face even more challenges in life – not least that many “plus size” brands end at a 24. The Super Fat Scholarship, in memory of our much missed Cat, is for someone size 28 and up who would otherwise face financial difficulties in attending Camp Boom.

The single parent scholarship

Raising kids is HARD WORK, especially trying to raise them to be at peace with their bodies. We want to thank you for helping to create a kinder new generation. House of Boom is pleased to provide this scholarship is for a single parent who would otherwise face financial difficulties in attending Camp Boom.

Caretaker scholarship to Camp Boom

By a huge margin, womxn are the caretakers in our society. Whether it’s the elderly, the young or those who have additional needs, maybe you’re spending all your time looking after someone else. How about we take care of YOU for a weekend instead?

Thanks to the very generous Dayna Berghan-Whyman, #LadyBeastNZ, this scholarship to someone who spends most of their life taking care of others and who would otherwise face financial difficulties in attending Camp Boom.

Disability scholarship

Society throws up enough barriers to disabled people. House of Boom is pleased to provide this scholarship for a disabled person (and their support person if needed) who would otherwise face financial difficulties in attending Camp Boom.

Person of colour scholarship

Fat activism owes everything to womxn of colour. One scholarship doesn’t go very far at all in settling that debt, or addressing centuries of systemic oppression, but you have to start somewhere right? House of Boom is pleased to provide a scholarship for someone who’s not white and who would otherwise face financial difficulties in attending Camp Boom.

Youth scholarship

Some young fat people are bold and setting the world on fire. Others haven’t yet come into their power as fully as they could. Either way the fat community as a whole has a lot to learn from them and a lot to share with them too. Being mindful that cost may be more likely a barrier for younger people, House of Boom is pleased to provide a scholarship especially for one person under the age of 25.
